We only hold our tournament once a year, so this is the ONE true opportunity for the students to show their families, friends, and more all the hard work they have put into their training! We want to see them build on this success and carry that confidence into other parts of their lives.
BEGINNERS’ SHOW
One of our most popular events is our Beginners’ Show Division. This is an introduction to our Tournament for our youngest and newest members (ages 4-6 white and yellow belts). This division allows the children to compete in an individual AND group format (think dance recital). All competitors in this division receive a trophy for their participation. These children may also compete in one of the other divisions for their rank if they choose (+ $10 per division).
REGULAR COMPETITORS
Older kids should sign up as a regular competitor. Registration as a “Regular Competitor” includes 2 of the divisions below. Ask them which things they like most! Your child’s Sensei can help them decide or you can call or email Sensei Genevieve for recommendations. Anyone is welcome to add events for $10 per division.
Kata: They choose their favorite empty hand kata / the one they think they do best, it does not have to be their newest or highest ranking (examples – blocking form 1 or 2, Pinion 1, 2, 3, etc.)
Self Defense: They choose 3 techniques – one punch defense, one grab defense, and one weapon defense. They perform all three with a partner, like we do in class.
Grappling: For those who love the groundwork / wrestling. These are 2 minute rounds against students of similar age, rank, and size. They are awarded points for positions of control.
Weapons Kata: Only if your student has learned one of our weapons katas – We will have 2 divisions, one for kids Orange through 2nd blue belt, and the other for Green belts and up.
Medals for competitors will be awarded to first, second and third place, and all runners-up will receive a winner’s medal.
Everyone will practice in classes (it is good experience and review of material whether they compete or not!) and hold Tournament Prep classes for anyone interested in competing as a regular competitor.
